Rethink team effectiveness

As business owners and leaders we have reached a point where it is evident that the world of work is changing rapidly and continuously. However, have we considered, to the same extent and degree, that the people in our businesses are changing too? The working environment consists of a variety of generations – Baby Boomers, Generation X, Millennials and Generation Z. The question therefore arises – how should employers balance the different needs of these distinct generations when it comes to team effectiveness? The need to manage these differences amongst generations proves to be pivotal to ensure that generational conflict does not hinder productivity or lead to unnecessary frustration, conflict or poor morale.

Many organisations are experiencing division and linear separation in terms of generational differences, which is made worse by intergenerational judgement and misunderstanding. Team management has also changed drastically as hierarchical expectations differ across generations which may lead to unclear roles. Furthermore, older generations expect the younger generations to assist with the latest technologies which can create tension and conflict.

It comes as no surprise that business leaders should be considering the importance of investing in team effectiveness interventions to enhance individual and team performance. A recent study reveals that Seventy percent (70%) of organisations have identified that leading multigenerational workforces is important for success over the next 12-18 months, but only ten percent say that they are ready to address this trend (Deloitte Insights, 2020). Thus, the time has come for employers to understand the current workforce and the differences that new generations bring into the working environment. When we understand these differences, leaders can leverage the strengths of each generation to create even more effective teams.

At Crowe DNA we believe in the power and diversity that comes with generational issues. We focus on developing training programmes that raises the awareness of generational issues that occur in teams thereby focusing in on the behaviours that enable teams to work more efficiently.
